Hermann Salzmann is based in Pukerua Bag, Porirua, New Zealand. He has devoted himself to the art of Maori carving for the past 10 years.

In Maori mythology, Tiki is said to have been created by Tane Mahuta, the god of forests and birds.  According to legend.  Tane formed Tiki from the earth or clay and breathed life into him, making Tiki the first human.  Tiki is often represented as a carved figure, symbolizing fertility, protection, and strength.
